What is Self-Development?
According to the American Psychological Association, self-development is simply self-guided improvement but what does that truly mean?
Let's examine the roots of the phrase “self-guided improvement” to see if we can define this process in a more useful way.
Self
The “self” part of the process doesn't just mean that it's about you. It is about you but that's a surface observation.
What goes on below the surface is really what it's all about. In order for you to even work on the process of self-development, you need to have a true awareness of self.
That means that you need to know what makes you tick right now – why you have the attitudes and emotional reactions that you have. It also means that you need to have the ability to see where you could improve in order to be a better person in some way.
Guided
Guided means that it's leading somewhere and that it's with a purpose. You will need to know what you want to change, why you want to change it and how you will change it.
Improvement
Improvement means just that – the change you make will improve how you feel about yourself and how you interact with others. Change for the sake of change means nothing but if the change makes your life better in some way, that's a worthwhile endeavor.
Human beings should always be growing and evolving. When we stop that process, we will stagnate just as standing water that has no flow will grow stagnant. You are able to become anything that you want to become as long as you make the effort.
The most important aspect of self-development is that you accept responsibility for who you are and how you act. Only when you own that responsibility can you make positive changes.
Does wanting to improve mean that you don't like yourself right now? Of course, for some that may be the case, but for most of us it simply means that we recognize areas where we could improve our lives for the better.
Wanting to do better or be a better person simply means that we are acknowledging our weaker areas and striving to improve upon them.
The first step in any self-development plan will be to evaluate yourself where you are at right now. Figure out what your strengths and weaknesses are – and ask others for their opinions, as well. Sometimes it can be hard to see our own problem areas but family and friends can help us see the truth.
Once we have identified our opportunities for growth, next we can set goals for improvement. For example, if you feel proscrastination is an issue for you, set a goal to complete a certain project and make it have a specific timeframe. Then you need to determine what you need to do to accomplish that goal.
