The Smartest Things You Can Do for Your Skin Health

The best way to protect yourself from the effects of the sun such as wrinkles, dark blotches, and skin cancer is to prevent the damage from occurring in the first place. You’ve been hearing sun-safety messages for years now. Magazines have given you constant reminders that aim to encourage you to cover up, as well as warn you about the dangers of unprotected sun exposure.

But, a recent study found that despite all the advisories, many adults still don’t safeguard their skin. The younger generations are the worst offenders. Even with so much evidence that any UV exposure damages your skin and can make you age beyond your years, these people still aren’t paying attention. Now, admittedly, slapping on sunblock every day can be tedious. But, it would be less of a challenge if you develop easy, safe-sun habits that become almost automatic.

One drawback to traditional sunscreen is its sometimes sticky, greasy consistency. Plus, it can take a while to dry. These factors make many people less enthusiastic about slathering it on. But now, you can’t really use that goopiness as an excuse.
Sunscreens come in pretty novel stick, spray-on, and sheer formulations, so they feel much drier on your skin, yet afford the same protection. Get a few kinds, stock on selections, and keep them with you at all times, so you’re never caught off guard if you spot an outdoor café, or get stuck in traffic with the sun burning through your car window.

More than that, get the ones that cover the broad spectrum. This should tell you that the product protects your skin from the effects of both UVA and UVB rays. The former penetrate the subcutaneous layer of your skin, causing wrinkles. These also trigger melanoma and carcinoma. Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer, the second most widespread form of cancer for relatively young folks. UVB rays, which reach just your dermis, cause sunburns. They are also to blame for many cases of melanoma.

To make it even easier for you, keep SPF-infused moisturizer by your shower. Having it right there in your caddy or medicine cabinet means you can easily put it on after drying off, giving you a base coat sun protection without really having to think about it. Make this a regular, reflexive routine, much like brushing your teeth in the morning.

Cover prime spots first. People tend to forget to put sunscreen on the back of the neck and along the hairline. Other negatively missed areas include the hands, backs of the ears, and soles of the feet. Another trouble area would be your scalp as well.

You can’t rub sunscreen into it, nor can you easily check for growths. Wear a hat during the summer, and ask your hairdresser to give your scalp a look when you go in for a cut. Aside from that, do the lips too. You need a lip moisturizer every single time you go outside. The lips can’t be shielded behind clothes or a hat, so a lip balm with SPF 15 is a must.
