Simple Ideas To Motivate Your Children

Our children are one of the most important parts of our lives. We want nothing but the best for them. We want them to do well in all things and grow to be happy, self-motivated adults.

Motivation, though, is sometimes the problem with children of today. It is far too easy to allow time in front of the television and the computer.

They often use the computer to complete their homework. They use social media to keep up with their friends. And they use computer games and television for entertainment and down time.

With all that time in front of something electronic, it is often difficult to motivate our children to get themselves up and out into the world, or even to get up long enough to take out the trash or do other simple household chores.

Here are 8 ideas to help you motivate your children:

1. Praise:children need to be praised for their accomplishments - no matter how big or how small. They need to know you are proud of them.

If they have done something to make you happy, and you express that to them, they are more likely to strive to make it happen again.

2. Avoid the negative: the phrase "what you focus on is what you get" is also true in this instance. If you continuously focus on the negative aspects of your child, you will get more negative from them.

They come to believe that negative behavior is what you expect so they continue to give it to you. Keep everything positive.

3. Be Proud: let your child know how proud you are of his accomplishment by showing off his work. In the mind of many children, even having their work displayed on the refrigerator shows you are proud. This encourages them even more.

4. Brag a little: grandparents, aunts and uncles all love to hear of your child's accomplishments. Give them a call (when your child is within ear shot) and brag a little about your child's successes.

5. Reward your child: we all like to be rewarded for our good works - even adults. Come up with a plan to reward your child for exceptional accomplishment - anything from good grades in school to cleaning their room without being asked. Whatever the reward, children will work to get it.

6. Be enthusiastic:be sincere in showing enthusiasm in the things that your child enjoys. By encouraging their interests and showing interest yourself, you will let your child know that he and his interests are important to you.

7. Talk with your child: it is important to keep open that line of communication. Talk about their interests and how you can help with their activities.

Talk about what happened in school, friends, disappointments. Again, let your child know you are interested in his life and are willing to help in any way that you can while also allowing him to maintain his privacy.

8. Do not overdo it: do not overwhelm your child with goal setting, schedules, planned activities. Homework, chores, and other activities of interest obviously come first.

But remember that children still need to be children. They need to be allowed to play - whether that means riding their bike or playing a video game - they need time to just relax and do what they want.
