Self Help Tips to Learn How to Speak in Public



One of the first things that a salesman has to learn is to be able to speak effectively in public. As a salesman, your career largely depends on getting people to listen to you and believe in what you are saying, regardless of the products you are selling. Studies show that people listen to the words 7 % of the time.

The other 93 % focuses on the tone of the voice and the body language. With this statistic, people contend that it doesn’t matter what you are saying but rather how you are delivering the message across to the people. This is tantamount to doing a song and dance routine and entertaining the people in general.

It doesn’t matter what you are talking about as long as the public is entertained with your antics. Although the statistic may be based on extensive research and studies, some people still feel it is still important to deliver the right message. Despite your actions and expressions, people still listen to what you are talking about. Content and delivery are two important aspects when talking in public.

People retain very little through listening. They retain more based on what they see rather than what they hear. Your effectiveness depends on how much people will remember you and what you talked about. Preachers and politicians all have a similar goal – to have the people believe in what they are saying. To achieve that goal, they have to first gain the attention of the persons.

Once they have the undivided attention of the people, they can then deliver their message and hope that people understand what they are talking about. You can lose the person’s attention if you don’t keep the person’s interest. For instance, talking in a monotone can be very boring and uninteresting. Although the topic may be of major concern, the person can become sleepy, drowsy or inattentive to what you are saying. The risk of become distracted is high.

Body language and facial expressions are important in keeping the person’s attention. When a person is attentive, they use both sound and sight to follow you and understand what you are talking about. Giving the right expressions at the proper time is important in bringing the message straight to the people. If you tell a person you are happy but your expressions and actions show you are sad and disgusted, the person will have a hard time believing you. People give a great deal of value to what they see in your body movements and expressions, not only to the words you are saying.

Even if the words you are saying may be minor compared to the other aspects that people take notice of, it is still important that whatever you are saying makes sense. Once you have the person’s attention, you can still lose the person’s interest if everything you say is gibberish and nonsensical. If fact, it may even be worse because people will doubt your integrity and knowledge regarding the subject matter. If people do not consider your words to mean anything, then your value as a speaker becomes questionable. People may look at you for entertainment but will not bother listening to what you are saying since there is no meaning in the content of your speech.

To be effective in public speaking, you need to show the people you believe in what you are talking about. Your tone of voice, facial expression and body language can help show the people you are sincere and believe in what you are talking about. You must make sure that once you have the attention of the people, what you are saying makes sense and is of importance to the people.

Keep a close watch over the people and make sure they do not get distracted by other things. Show confidence and self-assurance when talking in public. Do not stammer or show nervousness. People will notice that and might turn them off from listening to you.
