Self Help Tips How to Overcome Shyness
Shyness is something that millions of people can relate to. It is a kind of emotion that has an impact on the way a person feels and behaves when in the presence of other people. Shyness comes in different levels; some are moderately shy while others are extremely shy.
People who are shy feel self-conscious, nervous, uneasy, insecure, and timid when others are around. Shy individuals may become sweaty, nervous, tense, and even shaky when they are with other people, such as their boss, customer, or with those who they’ve only met recently.
Shy people feel at ease when in the company of family and friends however when they are surrounded by people who they do not usually interact with, then that’s the time when they start to feel uncomfortable.
What causes this emotion? Why is it that there are people who exude confidence and yet there are also those who simply cannot feel relaxed when attending meetings, social gatherings, and public speaking engagements?
Causes of Shyness
Studies show that there are several factors that contribute to shyness. One of these is genetics.
Although we normally assume that our genes have more to do with our physical traits such as the color of our skin, eyes, and hair, it also has something to do with personality traits—including shyness. Another cause of shyness is the environment that you grew up in.
If early in your childhood, you were able to develop a high level of self-esteem through the love and attention that your family gave you, then chances are that you would grow up to be a confident person.
On the other hand, people who grew up lacking of love and attention from their parents often become shy. Childrearing has a significant influence in a person’s level of confidence.
Additionally, the experiences that you’ve had from childhood to adulthood may also lead you to become a shy individual. People who have been bullied and constantly teased in the past have the tendency to become shy and insecure.
Getting Rid of Shyness
The good news is that you can still do something to overcome your shyness. Yes, you read that right. It’s never too late to change.
Here are some tips to help you:
• Become more self-aware.
The first step towards overcoming shyness is to accept that you have a problem. Once you have accepted it, you can then move on towards making a change. By becoming self-aware, you should also find out what your strengths and attributes are. When you know your strengths, you will be able to boost your self-esteem and this is important in overcoming shyness.
• Don’t be afraid.
Many people are shy because they are afraid to make mistakes and to be laughed at. They don’t speak up because they think that people will ridicule them. Do not be scared to speak up and to express your thoughts. Don’t be worried about what others will think of you. Take a deep breath and smile.
• Lastly, give yourself some exposure.
When you join public speaking activities and attend social events, little by little you will overcome your shyness. Encourage yourself to join such activities because your exposure to such will help you become a confident individual.
