Self Help Strategies for Snagging the Perfect Job

Think snagging the position you want is all about the perfect resume? Brace yourself because you need much more than that. Unless you’re related to the big boss or have a one-in-a-million talent, landing a great job is never easy.

And now, with cash-strapped businesses making fewer hires than ever, you just can’t outshine the competition…you have to blow them out of the water. To give yourself a winning edge, morph from another resume to an absolute must-hire.

First of all, give the people in the company a reason to look at your paper. When you submit your resume to the career services section of a company’s website, it can seem like it’s being sucked into a black hole.

But many of the recruiters say that’s the best way to apply. If you email it to a specific department, it might just end up with the wrong person. Snail mail is a pain. Someone in HR would have to input all your info into a database, and chances are, they won’t.

Here’s an insider tip: wait two days after a job is first posted before submitting your info. When HR goes through the deluge of resumes, they read the last ones first. If yours comes in later but still before deadline, it has a higher likelihood of being read.

Also, leave a phone message with the HR saying that you just sent in your cover letter and resume, and that you’re very interested in the job. They may remember your name and enthusiasm when they come across your information.

For the interview, nix the jeans. No matter what the overall corporate style is, your interview style should somewhat be formal. Candidates who are usually dressed too casually have a strike against them. It tells the people that you aren’t making enough of an effort.

At some cutting-edge workplaces, you may be able to get away with something a little funkier. But, most places expect you to be more traditional. A solid suit, with either black pants or a skirt, in black, blue, gray, or brown.

Many recruiters also frown on bare legs. So be safe and cover up those gams. This issue comes up a lot, and it may seem old-fashioned but a lot of the people can still be conservative, and wearing stockings or tights will come off as more serious about getting the job.

Unless you’re aiming for that job at hooters, go for a stylish and somewhat conservative look. Dressing too provocatively will be a big problem and an outright deal breaker. You’ll no doubt roll your eyes at what falls into a too-sexy category.

But, just because a suit is a must in most situations doesn’t mean you should look dowdy. Jewelry should be tasteful and minimal, and wear that confidence all throughout the interview.

It’s time to impress the bigwigs. Be polite and always say thank you at the very end of it. Stand straight and let them see the potential that is in you. If you believe in yourself, they will also believe in you.
