Setting goals is the single most important thing you can do to take control of your finances. It is an important part of creating budgets and the first step to turning your financial dreams into reality.
If you start by setting goals too high at the beginning you won’t stick with it. Set short term, medium term, and long term goals. Write them down, and look at them often.
Keep them in a place where you can see them everyday. Then you can work your goals into your budgets by putting money toward the vacation, the home or the car you want.
The short term goal might be paying down your credit card debt. The medium goal might be saving for that dream family vacation you always wanted but could not afford. The long term might be having a certain dollar amount set aside for your retirement.
Setting goals should be fun and flexible. Think of it as the first step to making your dreams come true. So get your pen and paper out and start dreaming. Write the dreams down. Writing them down and making a conscious effort to work toward them, brings you one step closer to accomplishing them.
Earl Nightingale a radio announcer, writer and motivational speaker in his audio cassette set “Lead The Field” said “We become what we think about. You are, at this moment the living embodiment of the sum total of your thoughts to this point in your life. You can be nothing else.
That’s why having a goal toward which to work is so very important. It gives our minds a focus and our lives a direction. By thinking every morning, every night, and as many times during the day as we can, about the goal we’ve established for ourselves, we actually begin moving toward it and bringing it toward us.”
The first step in setting goals is to ask yourself some questions:
What do you want out of life?
How high do you want your net worth to be?
Do you want a bigger house? A vacation home? A boat?
Do you want your children to go to college?
When you retire, will you live in the same home you live in now?
Do you want to travel when you retire?
Do you wish to sell your home and retire to your vacation home permanently?
When your job ends, will you take it easy or get a part time job?
Maybe you would like to turn a long time hobby into a business during retirement.
Setting goals is not always easy but should be fun, you have to keep asking yourself questions to find out where you want to go from here.
If you really don’t know the answer to these questions, maybe you should start by making a wish list. Write down your wishes, in how many years you would like to see it happen, and the approximate cost of the wish.
Then decide what order of importance you would like to put on them. If you’re single this is your starting place.
If you are married or have a partner you should both work on your own wish lists, then compare them and make compromises as to the importance and the order in which they should be reached.
So start setting goals and making a plan to reach them today. Put as much focus and determination into them as possible. A goal is just a wish if you don’t back it up with action.
You can face your financial future and make it better, whether it’s just okay now but you would like it to be better, or whether you are having temporary difficulties. You just need to have a plan and the determination and desire to follow it through.
