After you have tried everything you can think of, you begin to think nothing is going to work.
Every parent goes through a period of disaster and mayhem, next time you are at school or at a pre school ask one of the other mothers how they cope.
The best thing about going through a disaster is that sooner or later they really do end.
Sure, we all loose our temper at some stage, but, the less we do this while trying to teach our children not to, the better.
Say your two children Peter and John are playing the Sony Playstation and Peter starts loosing, Peter, the loosing child starts smashing into John, only so he cant win either.
Then after that stands in front of the television and so on.
You then tell Peter and John that they can both have individual turns or it will be turned off. This goes along fine until Peter starts loosing again and throws the controller at his brother hitting him in the eye.
You leave it alone for them to work it out on their own but find yourself dragged into the fight again, this time, Peter is sick of waiting for John to finish his turn and accidentally knocks the machine on purpose enough for John to have to restart his game. Peter is not happy about John getting another game and starts another fight because it was meant to be his turn.
Peter then turns to his brother and punches him, John starts crying and you have to intervene yet again. This time you turn the machine off to remove the means of the fight. Peter then starts yelling his way down the hallway, I’m so sick of you John, you start all the fights, and Mum and Dad always stick up for you.
With little to no reaction, Peter starts kicking the door to his bedroom and says “$%#! this place I’m leaving!” and storms out the front door with his backpack slung over his shoulder. What do you do now?
Well, there is not much else to do, except loose your temper, go outside and grab that boy by the arm and bring him back inside and send him to his room. There are many examples I’m sure but this one shows Peter breaking about five rules at the same time all being one after another.
The father has done his block and placed Peter in his room for some time to think of what to try next. There is no easy answer to this string of wrongs, but if you part the warring parties and give them time to cool off then speak to them individually about their behavior and what you expect in the future is possibly the only other thing you can realistically do.
