Self Help | Callanetics to Keep You Strong and Young

Callanetics is a type of exercise that was developed more than three decades ago. A woman named Callan Pinckney came up with the idea behind a very different type of exercise program in the 1970s. She called her program Callanetics.

From the Bio on her Book cover in my library: "Although trained in classical ballet, Callan Pinckney has learned from many other forms of dance and movement to fashion a technique of her own. Pinckney's involvement with exercise began when she restored her own body to fitness after ten years of packpacking around the world. "

Callanetics is different from the other popular low impact exercise programs. It teaches you ways in moving precisely and slowly so that you use each group of muscles.

The movements may be simple but are actually very effective in toning and shaping your muscles. You build on your strength and flexibility with only your body to help you.

The great thing about it is that it is a non-impact exercise program. Any person, regardless of age, can perform the movements.

Because you do the exercises in Callanetics slowly and precisely, you get much better results. Plus, it can help you with coordination by giving you a better sense of your body and its movements.

What makes Callanetics unique is that it does not require the use of expensive exercise equipment. You use your body weight for resistance.

It's not similar to aerobics because the movements are very slow so that you are sure to target specific muscles. Callanetics uses very sharp muscle movements to increase metabolism and help your body burn off calories quickly and more efficiently.

It is even better than low impact programs. You can change the shape of your body and you can drop inches from your frame if you do the program regularly and on a weekly basis.

Traditionally speaking, Callanetics was not meant for weight loss. In the years that followed its discovery, people designed cardio programs to go with the exercise so that you lose weight and tone up at the same time.

I have her book, but must go and have a look for some DVD's or videos so that I can work by following along, as I found her book too hard to work to alone without any guidance.
