If I were asked which is the area of greatest misunderstanding and confusion in the field of nutrition, I would immediately be forced to reply that it is the failure to properly understand and interpret the symptoms and changes which follow the beginning of a better nutritional program.
What is meant by a better nutritional program?
It is the introduction of foods of higher quality in place of lower quality ones. For example, if a person replaces a protein rich food such as pork with beef, the beef may be considered the superior of the two due to its easier digestibility, lower and less saturated fat content, etc.; chicken is superior to beef and fish is superior to chicken because of its more rapid digestibility and lower saturated fat content. Lima beans, lentils, or chick peas, which are eaten at the same meal with vegetables are superior in all the nutrients needed to rebuild health.
As we go higher on the scale of quality, we begin to include protein rich food which may be eaten in the unfired state, such as cheese which is made from raw milk and unsalted. Then we ascend to the nuts and seeds which are eaten in the natural state (raw and unsalted).
To summarize: the closer the food comes to the natural state in which it occurs, or the closer to its raw, unfired form, the higher its quality. In this condition, all the enzymes are found intact.
The amino acids are in their finest form. The minerals, vitamins, trace elements, carbohydrates, and “life force” are present. The life force, in turn, is capable of reproducing healthy tissue.
This same classification of quality which we analyzed in relation to protein rich foods applies to the carbohydrates (the starch and sugar-rich foods), the fats, and the mineral-rich foods.
The quality of a nutritional program is also improved by omitting toxic substances such as coffee, tea, chocolate, tobacco, salt, pepper, etc. from your diet.
What is the relation of quality of foods to recovery from illness? It is this in a nutshell:
The higher the quality of food we eat, the quicker we recover from disease, provided we are able to digest and assimilate properly.
To this must be added the knowledge of
(a) proper food combining;
(b) proper order of eating the different kinds of food at a meal, e.g., the most easily digested food should be eaten first, the more complex one second, and the most concentrated item last;
(c) the correct quantity of food to be consumed (of each type) in the meal; and
(d) the correct time for eating (when hungry and not by the clock).
Now, what happens when a person follows these rules and makes a decided improvement in the quality of food consumed?
Remarkable things begin to happen to the body as well as the mind. The amazing intelligence present in every cell of the body and the wisdom of the body in its operation immediately becomes manifest.

The same principle holds true for vitamin and mineral supplements. You usually get exactly what you pay for.
Following time honored practices of the drug industry, many “natural” food supplements contain an awesome list of synthetic fillers. In general, the more filler, the cheaper the supplement.
If it’s in a tablet, the chances are close to 100% that some type of harmful filler will be found in the tablet.
With some exceptions, pure substances such as vitamin, mineral chelates, herbs or amino acids do not possess the necessary characteristics which allow them to be compressed directly without the addition of binders, lubricants, diluents, disintegrators, coloring and flavoring agents.
The larger the tablet, the more it requires the use of binders such as hydrogenated oils (e.g. calcium or magnesium stearate). Smaller tablets may be manufactured using the cellulose derivatives (ethyl, methyl) as binders.
Time release tablets are perhaps the most worrisome. For example, the release of 1000 mg. of Vitamin C over a period of 6 hours may require the addition of 400 mg. of hydrogenated oil (plastic butter) to the tablet. The addition of more oil prolongs the release, while the use of less allows quicker disintegration.
Supplements in a vegetable-based capsule, powder or liquid form do not have such requirements and are far less likely to contain toxic additives.
If you are a strict vegetarian, beware of gelatin-encapsulated supplements. Gelatin used in the manufacture of capsules is derived from collagenous beef (bovine) or pork (porcine/swine) material.
Although it is true that most healthy people will have no obvious side effects from ingesting the small amount of toxins found in cheap vitamins, the long term consequences of continuous, daily intakes are potentially dangerous.
Over 7% of the population displays sensitivity to these chemicals which, for the most part, do not elicit immediate allergic reactions in the average healthy person.
Allergic reactions can affect any organ system in the body including the brain which often displays symptoms such as fatigue, memory loss, depression, anxiety, hallucinations and insomnia.

1. Attaining and maintaining lean body mass is a lifetime commitment, needing lifetime lifestyle strategies.
2. Ease on Down the Diet Road: Making gradual adjustments in food, exercise and supplementation works better for long-term weight-loss than drastic measures you cannot maintain.
3. Eat small frequent meals, well chewed, slowly eaten. Give thanks before meals. Put your fork, spoon, or food down between each bite.
4. Start eating early and try to get most of your calories in by 3-5 PM.
5. When hungry between meals, try 8 to 16 oz of water first. Green tea is likely even better. Perhaps add fiber (psyllium, oat bran, chitosan) to the water to “fill you up” and absorb fat and bile.
6. Eat vegetable-based clear soups and fish frequently.
7. Create “reward meals”. The key to a long-term strategy of eating well is not having to be being perfect. Have some “planned cheating” or a “cheat allowance” built into your strategy.
8. Always start with a sensible, balanced nutrient dense nutrition strategy combined with exercise and supplements.
Move to the more extreme and restricted strategies only as proved necessary. Then “cycle” or “sandwich” these more extreme strategies with a balanced nutrient dense wide variety strategy.
This way you will not get “bored” with the more restrictive strategies, which are very difficult to maintain for long periods of time for most of us.
Don’t play the “all or nothing” Yo-Yo diet game.
9. If obese, high sodium intake significantly increases death risk, regardless of blood pressure. So if you are obese be moderate in sodium from salt and additives.
10. Look in the mirror every day, preferably before or after showering, and tell the person in the mirror you love him/her.
