Self Confidence Building |Get over your shyness

Shyness is prevalent in a great number of people although it might not be very apparent when associating with them. Shyness is feeling discomfort when surrounded with other people and hesitation in interacting with other people. Shyness can be a mild social awkwardness to an extreme chronic disposition.

Shyness can occur in different situations and could be triggered by authorities, strangers, group participation and other types of social actions. In effect, a shy person tends to dissociate from other people. Shy people are not necessarily introverts. Introverts prefer being alone than socializing but do not fear social events if they have to attend such occasions.

Shyness can be a mild inconvenience or a major disorder. Some people can get afflicted with a severe case of shyness that it affects their social life and career. A chronically shy person can become obsessive with paranoid tendencies.

People exhibit shyness in different forms and degrees. Severe shyness can cause low esteem, depression and anxiety. Some people may be shy in large gatherings but comfortable in small groups. Others become shy when talking to the opposite gender. Some shy people feel discomfort with people they’ve just met while others are never comfortable when surrounded with people, even with those they have known for a long time.

If your shyness is of a lesser degree, try to overcome it by practicing social skills and participating in social functions. Understand the areas where you encounter shyness and get exposed to them. One way of overcoming shyness is to face the problem and resolve your fears.

If your shyness is of a higher degree and brings about trembling and sweating, try some relaxation techniques to bring down your anxiety. Many shy people try to avoid the situations that cause them to be shy, such as turning down social functions, crossing the street to avoid meeting someone, and refusing promotions that will force them to meet more people.

Avoidance is not the solution to fighting shyness. In fact, it might even turn out worse. Every time you avoid the occasion, you reinforce your sentiments on shyness. You become more depressed and isolated. You end up with a lower self-esteem and the fear becomes stronger.

The better approach is to face the occasions that cause you to be shy. It can be done in stages so you can build up your self-confidence slowly over time. If you have somebody that you can trust and turn to for help, ask him to accompany you when you go out to those events that cause you to be shy.

You can turn to them for help. They might be able to support you when you start feeling shyness overcome you. Other techniques involve behavioral and cognitive approaches. You learn about your fears and how to deal with them in the current situation.

It does not delve in the past and it does not try to explore the internal reasons and past causes for the fears. It’s main focus is dealing with the present.

Other people resort to drugs and other forms of alcohol to boost their spirits and give them some form of encouragement to address their fears. This is not a good approach as people will realize your addiction to drugs, alcohol and other anti-depressant medication.

If you are experiencing extreme stress and tension over your shyness, consult a physician or therapist. You might have other anxiety disorders which are causing your shyness.
