If your shyness is of a higher degree and brings about trembling and sweating, try some relaxation techniques to bring down your anxiety. Many shy people try to avoid the situations that cause them to be shy, such as turning down social functions, crossing the street to avoid meeting someone, and refusing promotions that will force them to meet more people.
Avoidance is not the solution to fighting shyness. In fact, it might even turn out worse. Every time you avoid the occasion, you reinforce your sentiments on shyness. You become more depressed and isolated. You end up with a lower self-esteem and the fear becomes stronger.
The better approach is to face the occasions that cause you to be shy. It can be done in stages so you can build up your self-confidence slowly over time. If you have somebody that you can trust and turn to for help, ask him to accompany you when you go out to those events that cause you to be shy.
