Tips for your Happiness:

The Time to Act by Jim Rohn

Engaging in genuine discipline requires that you develop the ability to take action. You don’t need to be hasty if it isn’t required, but you don’t want to lose much time either. Here’s the time to act: when the idea is hot and the emotion is strong.

Let’s say you would like to build your library. If that is a strong desire for you, what you’ve got to do is get the first book. Then get the second book. Take action as soon as possible, before the feeling passes and before the idea dims. If you don’t, here’s what happens -

– You Fall Prey to the Law of Diminishing Intent -

We intend to take action when the idea strikes us. We intend to do something when the emotion is high. But if we don’t translate that intention into action fairly soon, the urgency starts to diminish. A month from now the passion is cold. A year from now it can’t be found.

So take action. Set up a discipline when the emotions are high and the idea is strong, clear, and powerful. If somebody talks about good health and you’re motivated by it, you need to get a book on nutrition. Get the book before the idea passes, before the emotion gets cold. Begin the process. Fall on the floor and do some push-ups. You’ve got to take action; otherwise the wisdom is wasted. The emotion soon passes unless you apply it to a disciplined activity. Discipline enables you to capture the emotion and the wisdom and translate them into action. The key is to increase your motivation by quickly setting up the disciplines. By doing so, you’ve started a whole new life process.

Here is the greatest value of discipline: self-worth, also known as self-esteem. Many people who are teaching self-esteem these days don’t connect it to discipline. But once we sense the least lack of discipline within ourselves, it starts to erode our psyche. One of the greatest temptations is to just ease up a little bit. Instead of doing your best, you allow yourself to do just a little less than your best. Sure enough, you’ve started in the slightest way to decrease your sense of self-worth.

There is a problem with even a little bit of neglect. Neglect starts as an infection. If you don’t take care of it, it becomes a disease. And one neglect leads to another. Worst of all, when neglect starts, it diminishes our self-worth.

Once this has happened, how can you regain your self-respect? All you have to do is act now! Start with the smallest discipline that corresponds to your own philosophy. Make the commitment: “I will discipline myself to achieve my goals so that in the years ahead I can celebrate my successes.”

1. How to Stay On Top Of All Your Projects

By Jeffrey E. Auerbach, Ph.D.

In my coaching practice I find that professionals are almost universally affected by an overflowing number of projects and roles. Is that true for you? Do you find yourself overwhelmed with the sheer volume of hats that you wear? Plus, now that you are focused on building your coaching practice you seem to have even more projects that you are attempting to manage.

My experience has shown that people need a system to help them manage the multiple projects and roles they are responsible for. For example, if you don’t have a system too much slips through the cracks and progress on your most important goals is slowed.

The solution is to get all your projects and roles down on paper or in a word processing document – a “Master Project and Roles List”. That way your brainpower is free to think clearly – focused and directed on the project at hand.

What do I mean by “project”? Executive Coach David Allen writes in “Getting Things Done” (2001, Penguin Books) that a project is “any desired result that requires more than one action step. This means that some rather small things that you might not normally call projects are going to be on your “Projects” list. The reasoning is that if one step won’t complete something, some kind of stake needs to be placed in the ground to remind you that there’s something still left to do.”

Examples of your projects might be: designing a marketing letter, planning a trip, cleaning your garage, or completing a course. If you added up all your projects you might easily have twenty to thirty of them – or more. Each of your projects may have many action steps associated with it. When you have completed enough of the action steps you have completed the project.

What is a role? A role is a responsibility, function or job. Some of your roles likely include what is most important to you. For example one of your primary roles may be being a mother or father, or a husband or wife. Fulfilling these roles to your standards may involve many actions that you do regularly.

Recommended Coaching Step: Here is an exercise that will bring you and your clients much benefit. Before you do anything else, print this out for guidance and then follow these directions.

Sit down in front of your computer and begin typing a master list of projects that you are involved with. List every project that you can think of. You will notice you immediately begin to feel better once you get a thorough list.

For example, your list might include some of these items:
Manage family finances
Promote my coaching practice
Complete courses
Exercise regularly
Plan vacation
Order magazine
Make a will
Volunteer at school
Garden
Service car
Order new cards
Buy new book
Clean desk at office
Clean house

Now list all your roles. Roles are actually like projects, but you may feel more comfortable calling them roles.

Here is an example of a partial sample of one my client’s role lists (material disguised):
Partner to Stuart
Mother to Sarah
Mother to Timothy
Mother to Ashley
Helping Elderly Mother
Therapist to My Clients
PTA Officer
Soccer Assistant Coach

Once you have created your master project and role list, you will probably notice you feel calmer –and more organized. You might think, “Wow, it feels good just getting it all down on paper. It is a lot but somehow I feel more organized and more under control just having a complete list.

The next step is to go through your lists and add all the action steps that you can think of beneath each project or role.

Save your document and print it out. You will almost certainly think of more projects and more action steps. That is normal. The good thing is that now you have a single master list where you can list that project and that action step so they never will be lost.

To work with your Master List, resolve to take your list out each morning. Decide which project or role you are going to focus on that morning and that day. Then choose what is the one action step you will do NEXT for several of your projects or roles. Then do those steps. Then look over your list again and decide what is one thing you will do next – and then do that step.

By looking over your Master Project and Role List daily you will find that you are more on top of your projects and your responsibilities. Major benefits will be that less will fall through the cracks and you will accomplish more than you ever have before.

Review:

1. Create a Master Project and Role List
2. Review the list daily.
3. Keep identifying what is the one next step you will do for your projects and roles. If you do that you will keep moving forward.

Editor’s Note: RESIGNATION

I am hereby officially tendering
my resignation as an adult. I have
decided I would like to accept the
responsibilities of an 8 year-old again.

I want to go to McDonald’s and think
that it’s a four star restaurant.

I want to sail sticks across a fresh mud
puddle and make a sidewalk with rocks.

I want to think M&Ms are better than
money because you can eat them.

I want to lie under a big oak tree and
run a lemonade stand with my friends on
a hot summer’s day.

I want to return to a time when life was
simple; When all you knew were colors,
multiplication tables, and nursery
rhymes, but that didn’t bother you,
because you didn’t know what you
didn’t know and you didn’t care.

All you knew was to be happy because you were
blissfully unaware of
all the things that should make you
worried or upset.

I want to think the world is fair.
That everyone is honest and good.

I want to believe that anything is
possible. I want to be oblivious
to the complexities of life and be
overly excited by the little things
again.

I want to live simple again. I
don’t want my day to consist of
computer crashes, mountains of paperwork,
depressing news, how to survive more days
in the month than there is money in the
bank, doctor bills, gossip, and illness,

I want to believe in the power of
smiles, hugs, a kind word, truth,
justice, peace, dreams, the imagination,
mankind, and making angels in the snow.

So . . . here’s my cheque book
and my car-keys, my credit card bills
and my tax statements. I am officially
resigning from adulthood.
And if you want to discuss this
further, you’ll have to catch me
first, cause……..

……”Tag! You’re it.”

Pass this to someone and brighten
their day by helping them remember
the Simple things in Life!

((((((((((((((HUGS))))))))))))))

Hope Ya’ll join me
