Kids of working moms rank high if they get good care
No need to feel guilty about working away from home if you have a three-year-old. Studies by Columbia University say that at age 3, a child whose mother didn’t work by the ninth month scores the same as the child of a working mother — if the mother is sensitive and arranges above-average child care.
The study showed that an average child with below-average child care and mother sensitivity, whose mother worked 30 hours a week, scored some 13 points lower on the Bracken School Readiness test. It tests knowledge of colors, letters, numbers, shapes, and comparisons.
A child whose mother worked 30 hours or more who was in an average environment, scored six points lower than the child whose mother worked but who received excellent care.
Real Commitment: Bad Relationship Habits to Avoid
Nearly everyone on the planet is excited about having someone to love them, and someone they can love. But sometimes, not all love can be healthy: it can be an addiction, or a dependency, or it can be hurtful because it is manifested or understood in an unhealthy way. A relationship is more complicated than it seems: it is difficult to start, and so much more difficult to maintain.
There are certain habits that you need to avoid when in a relationship. Remember, a relationship is like a street built for two people to walk side by side: if one of you walks ahead or lags behind, what you have is a master and slave relationship, not something built on love.
– Be sensitive: do as much as you can to avoid hurting the other party, but most importantly, do as much as you can to empathize. Empathy means understanding how the other person feels: if your partner is happy, take time to rejoice with him or her; if your partner is sad, then do your best to comfort him or her. Many of the biggest problems in relationships come with a lack of empathy, so do your best to get in touch with your partners emotions.
– Avoid forcing your own opinions on the other person. By keeping an open mind, you wont only win your partner to your side, youll also learn a lot from what your partner has to say.
– Avoid talking too much. Listen to what your partner has to say, and listen to what your partner isnt saying. Talking is not only about the words, but about the body language. If you have spent a long time with your partner, then you will know if he or she is uneasy, or if he or she is sad. Recognize any telltale signs of these things, and you will be able to empathize better and ultimately connect better with your partner.
– Avoid being too serious. Have fun! The best relationships are built on a good, decent sense of humor.
– Avoid turning the relationship into a reward for you. Love isnt a noun, it is a verb, so if you want to be loved, you must love first; if you want to be respected, you must respect the other person first. Give, but dont expect anything in return. Sometimes, relationships are destroyed by expectations that are set too high.
– Avoid making your partner the center of your universe. Love yourself first! Only then can you truly love someone else.
A Rich Retirement
Whether it is you who is approaching those golden years we call retirement or one of your loved ones is in those years, there is no question that making that transition from the working world and decades of responsibility and hard work is not always easy.
The sudden change of lifestyle and that feeling of no longer being useful is one of the most difficult aspects of retirement and growing older. When you combine that with reduced activity and the natural decline in physical ability that aging brings, you have a powerful emotional transition to go through.
That is why people who actively counsel the elderly have learned that the most positive thing a person can do to combat that depression and sense of uselessness that plaques retirees is to make themselves useful. And there is no better place for them to do that than in community service.
There are a variety of great reasons that volunteerism among the elderly is such a great idea. And if you are in a position to counsel an aging family member or friend, it is important to remember that doing community service is not all about being charitable and helping out the down and out. It is just as much about the health and well-being of the retiree as it is for the good of the community and the people in it.
By getting out into the community and finding rewarding ways to perform community service, that sense of being needed and being a part of something is given back to the retiree. Community service and the retirement set are a perfect match for each other. People who are staffing community service projects are always in need of an army of qualified and mature help, especially from those who have sufficient time to really do a good job with a community service project.
This is just right for retiree who if anything suffers with too much time on their hands. Too often, that time can be turned to self-pity or indulging in less than healthy lifestyle choice. Community service is, after all, work. And as a people who are enjoying their rewards from a lifetime of work, this is just the thing to transition to a life of retirement.
Community service can also call upon the elderly to participate in some level of physical activity. Now your local community service coordinator can make sure that their elderly volunteers are given assignments appropriate to their physical abilities. But just getting out there and greeting others, reading to the blind, helping with a food or blood drive or jumping in where they can on a big community project gets the blood moving and maybe just the right kind of exercise they need to stay active and healthy.
Community service also provides opportunities to socialize with people of all ages and social backgrounds. One of the greatest dangers of a retirement lifestyle is the loneliness and isolation stepping out of the working world causes. Even if the elderly person lives in a retirement community, the chance to socialize with younger people and people of many backgrounds and orientations is tremendously healthy for the mental stability of one in that stage of life.
The benefits to the retiree of getting involved in community service are many. But giving that retired person that sense of personal value and worth that they have come to expect from each days work is valuable beyond measurement.
Many community service projects are short term so the volunteers get that immediate gratification that gives anyone a boost, but even more so a retiree who feels left out and not useful. Community service may be just the medicine to cure those ills.

Almonds Can Help Reduce Inflammation and Cholesterol
Two recently published studies suggest that a healthy diet that includes almonds can reduce two of the primary risk factors for heart disease: high cholesterol and elevated C-reactive protein (a marker for internal inflammation).
Not only that, but both studies (published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition and the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, respectively) show that a diet rich in almonds can accomplish this as well as or better than first-generation statin drugs.
In addition to having heart-healthy monounsaturated fat, almonds are the most nutritionally dense nut. They are an excellent source of vitamin E, magnesium, potassium, calcium, iron, protein, and fiber.
Tips for Deciding on a Balanced Diet
Good nutrition is the bedrock of lifelong health and should ideally start right from infancy. A balanced diet is essential to get all the nutrients needed for growth. It is also critical if one wants to maintain optimal health. Poor eating habits not only result in overweight and obesity but can also lead to serious diseases like diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, osteoporosis and some form of cancers.
A balanced diet is one that contains all nutrients in correct proportions. Weight loss plans based on low carbohydrate intake tend to ignore that carbohydrates are an important source of energy. Proteins are necessary for growth and healing wounds. It is also a myth that all fats and oils should be avoided. Fats are stored beneath the skin and protect us from cold and necessary as an energy source. The base line is balancing rather than avoiding.
Too much or too less of either of the three is bad for your health. If you avoid fats to lose weight and eat more of proteins and carbohydrates then your body will convert some of them into fat.
– Grains – Prefer whole grains like whole wheat, brown rice and oatmeal over refined bread, pastas and breakfast cereals.
– Dairy products – Organic dairy is the best choice.
– Oils – Fresh high quality oils like olive and coconut oil and oils derived from raw nuts and seeds are healthy sources of fat.
Besides this you should eat slowly and chew your food properly before swallowing. Digestion actually begins in your mouth where digestive enzymes in the saliva mix with food. Eat everything, but in moderation. The signal of a full stomach reaches the brain after about 20 minutes – eat slowly to avoid over eating.

What is addiction?
Addictions are most commonly associated with drug and alcohol addiction, however the truth is millions of people suffer from all kinds of addictions.
Some of these addictions are related to some form of chemical dependency such as alcohol, controlled substances and even prescription medicines. Other addictions are related to compulsive types of behavior such as gambling, shopping, food disorders an even the Internet.
One of the most important things to recognize about any type of addiction, regardless of whether it is a chemical addiction or a behavioral addiction; is that it is not a matter of choice. Individuals who are addicts do not have the ability to simply decide to stop abusing their ‘drug’ of choice. Addictions affect not only the user, but also their family and friends as well.
There are so many in the world today that is trying to hide the fact that they have an addiction. It makes no difference what type of addiction it is or how bad it is, someone is always going to find out.
There are different types of addictions and some are worse than others in the sense that they can cause harm to a person. However, an addiction is going to be a problem that has to be fixed at some point.
Just what is addiction? Addiction is a physiological dependence on something, and is both physical and psychological in nature. When a person is addicted they literally need to feed that addiction constantly. Addiction is a traitor it sneaks up on you.
People who are addicted often do not recognize that they have a problem, they think that the problem is with everyone. Addiction is different from abuse, a person can abuse drugs and not be addicted. The two most vital factors in determining addiction are tolerance and physical dependency.
Addiction is very destructive, and most of the time people who are suffering from it end up hurting themselves and their love ones. It is hard to overcome but once the person began to see addiction as a problem in their life they can immediately seek alcoholism treatment or addiction treatment.
Signs & Symptoms of an addiction
There are signs of addiction for many that do try and hide the fact. It is important for the people around an addictive person to be aware of the signs and try and find out what the problems are. If a person has a problem with drugs or alcohol, a bystander needs to pay close attention to them and watch for the signs. There are so many signs that may lead for suspicious behavior.
A few of the signs that a person has an addiction to something are weight gain, weight loss; mood changes, eating problems or depression. These are all very possible signs that someone is having a problem in their life and may need to have help overcoming it. There are many emotional signs of addiction that many have to watch out for in people that they think might be having a problem.
* Withdrawal or keeping secret from family and friends.
The physical signs of an addiction are the following:
Any time that a person is dealing with an addiction and a friend or family member notices it, they should try and get help for them. This is something that is very important to do because it is going to help them find their way to a better life. You do not want your friend or family member sick and helpless to an addiction of any kind. You need to help them find their way and make them want to get help. This will make all the difference to them and also make you feel good about what you have done.
For most addicts, it can be extremely difficult to recognize that what they have associated as simply a habit is actually an addiction. While every individual is different there are some symptoms that are prevalent among most addicts and addictions:

Answering yes to three or more of the above symptoms during a 12 month period may show that you or a loved one has an addiction. The first step to treating an addiction is recognizing that it exists.
What Causes addiction?
How does it begin and when does a pattern of behavior become an addiction? Some individuals seem to have the ability to use a substance or engage in a behavior periodically over a period of years without becoming ‘hooked.’ Others; however are not capable of stopping and become addicted.
Addictions affect all social and educational groups. There is no typical addict.
The causes of addiction have been studied for several years. In many ways, addiction is caused by the emotion the substance or behavior brings about in the user. The body and mind become dependent on that feeling and seeks to maintain it.
There are some alarming facts to consider regarding addictive disorders. For instance, a recent report in the National Drug Addiction Recovery Month Kit showed the cost of alcohol and illicit drug use in the workplace, including lost productivity, accidents and medical claims to be an estimated $140 billion per year.
Another fact: every eight seconds, a person dies due to a tobacco-related illness, according to the World Health Organization.
Also, an estimated 28 percent to 30 percent of people in the U.S.A. alone have an addictive substance abuse disorder, a mental health disorder or both, according to a 2002 report by the National Mental Health Association.
And alcohol abuse and dependence occurs four times as much among men over the age of 65 than women in the same age group, according to the Surgeon General’s Report on Mental Health, 1999.
Many researchers believe that addiction is a behavior that can be controlled to some extent and also a brain disease. And since some testing with functional magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI) found that all addictions tend to cause nearly the same reactions inside the brain, there could be one type of control model for addiction health-related issues. In other words, just as there is one disorder or disease labeled asthma, there would be one for addiction, covering all addictions; gambling, smoking, overeating, drugs, etc. Then one main treatment strategy or plan could be used to treat all addictions.

Psychologists at Case Western Reserve University say interpersonal rejection can dramatically reduce the capacity for intelligent thought. It is so apparent to researchers that they wonder if reasoning skills evolved to help us navigate the complexities of social life rather than help us solve technical problems.
After taking a personality test in one study, one group of subjects was told they would die alone. The other group was told to expect lasting friendships. Subjects who thought they would have a solitary life were significantly impaired in performing complex reasoning tasks. They were also slower and less accurate in their responses to a timed IQ test.
The doctors’ report, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, said the effect was similar to the cognitive impairment caused by head injuries. In a related study, rejected people took greater risks and made more unhealthy choices rather than taking better care of themselves.
Study leaders conclude that excluded individuals are so busy trying to suppress emotional distress that they are unable to engage in controlled thinking.
If you can arrange to include a socially rejected employee in more socialized activities, you could be rewarded with one who thinks better and works better.
