There are some people who are hard to buy for, and some you simply forgot about until the last minute. Either way, online gift certificates are the perfect solution for gifts you need to buy for friends and family at Christmas.

Online gift certificates are great presents for men and women, kids and adults. You can give gift cards for toy stores, clothing shops, video game stores, and even the recipient’s favorite restaurants!

Although they can be perfect for last minute shopping, online gift certificates can also be purchased in advance for special occasions. You can set a date in the future when it gets delivered, along with a special message from you. It’s as if your shopping is done on autopilot for you, so that you never forget anyone on your gift list.

Sometimes you’ll go to a broad online gift certificates website to buy your cards. If you do this, make sure you understand that it’s the individual companies that set the rules for their specific card, not the website. For example, if you want to give an online gift certificate to Target, you would look to them for rules on gift cards, not the gift card site selling the certificate to you.

Ten years ago, it was harder to feel confident giving online gift certificates to your friends and family. You didn’t know how web savvy the recipient was, and if they’d feel comfortable ordering online – since many people were skeptical about it.

But now, everyone shops online. Security risks are low with precautions retailers have taken to ensure your privacy, and online gift certificates help them spend money without handing over their own banking information if they have any residual doubts.

Some online gift certificates can be printed out and put in a Christmas card to be given to the gift recipient. Others will be emailed directly to the person, but you can add a special greeting to personalize the gift if you want.

Need some specific ideas about using gift certificates for friends and family? In addition to basic Visa, American Express or Discover cards, how about these:

• For grown women: PajamaGram, Amazon, Borders books, or Sephora cosmetics
• For grown men: Bass Pro Shop, Omaha Steaks, or PepBoys Auto
• For teens: Best Buy, Target, or iTunes
• For little ones: Toys R Us, Babies R Us, or Barnes and Noble

Online gift certificates are welcomed by everyone. They love getting to pick their own present and any denomination is okay. You could give cash in an envelope, but an online gift certificate makes it more special.
