Leadership: The Most Important Trait of an Employer

As a business owner, you will eventually have people working for you. The people who work for you look up to you as their leader. It is part of your role as a business owner to show good leadership.

You need to be leader who will be powerful and charismatic enough to inspire your employees. You should be able to bring about positive change not only in your life, but also in the lives of those who work for you.

What makes a person a good leader?

• He leads by example:
Some leaders are preachers. They give instructions to people, but they do not practice what they preach. As a leader, you should know how to be an example to your employees. To be able to achieve something holistically, you should start with yourself and strive for others to follow. You cannot expect your people to be hardworking, if you are lazy yourself. A leader leads by example so you have to be a good example to your people.

• He has a vision:
A leader is someone who is not content with mediocre, but is one who aspires for something great. He dreams and he aspires big things. You should give yourself some room to dream.

• He has a plan:
To be able to achieve greatness, a leader should write out a plan that will make all these things possible. A plan is a blueprint that will serve as a guide. To always stay on track and have some sort of reference, a plan should be written. A leader establishes a plan and he sees it through. You should be a planner and carry it through to the end.

• He knows how to take charge:
There is a difference with taking charge and ordering people like slaves, and another to have the ability to inspire the people to imbibe the same principles and beliefs as you. People should know that you are the boss, but they should not fulfill their tasks because they fear you. A good leader does not need to force people to work, people will want to work for you and with you because they believe in what you are trying to achieve.

• He knows how to admit his faults:
While many expects their leaders to be infallible, as a human being he too will make mistakes. If that happens to you, you should be brave enough to admit your insufficiencies, and be humble enough to admit defeat. If you have erred, acknowledge that and do not blame your faults on other people.

Leaders are not born overnight. It takes a lot of hard work and experience for one to become an effective leader. You as a business owner and employer should aspire to be a leader. Why? Because to be able to withstand all the pressures that being in business brings, you will have to imbibe all the characteristics that a leader should have.
