Knowing the ‘Why’ Before You Venture into a New Business

When a person is able to formulate a brilliant moneymaking idea, more often than not, he would immediately begin to find ways to make it happen. But while hasty decisions might work for some, it doesn’t always work for all.

You see, starting a business takes a lot of preparation. It requires you to sit down and come up with a business plan. It also requires you to acquire enough money for capital.

There are even business endeavors that would require you to hire at least one or two employees for it to begin operations. However, the one thing that many people often overlook when venturing into a new business is to actually spend time knowing the “why.” But what does knowing the “why” mean, anyway?

Knowing the “why” means recognizing and understanding your reasons for wanting to put up the business in the first place.
• Why do you want to put up this kind of business?
• What has driven you to try your hand at it?
• What factors have encouraged you to pursue it?

Here are just some of the reasons why it is good to know your “why” before starting a business:

• Knowing the “why” is essential because once you’ve got the ball rolling, you will encounter so many challenges that could easily break you if you haven’t fully prepared for them. Your “why” will be the fire that will energize you, make you strong, and keep you going in the midst of business problems.

• Knowing the “why” will give you a sense of fulfillment once you have achieved certain milestones in your business. When you do not bother to find the reasons as to why you want to put up the business, you will go through different phases in your business life cycle without really knowing if you have reached your goals or not. It would be very hard to feel satisfied when you have no clear purpose in mind.

• Knowing the “why” helps you begin with the end in mind. When you know your reasons for wanting to venture into a particular business, it will be easier for you to plan and set objectives. This is because your end goal will serve as the basis for all your plans, intentions, and strategies. In a way, it will be your personal vision statement.

People have different reasons for wanting to venture into a business. It could be because they want to achieve financial freedom. It could also be that they want to be able to spend more time at home and a home business is an excellent option.

Others want to become their own boss and use their skills and abilities without limits; and there are also those who want to own a business because they want to be socially responsible and provide jobs for people.

Whatever your “why” may be, you need to be fully aware of what has driven you to start a business. This way you will have a solid framework for your business enterprise.
