How To Learn Piano: An Introduction For Absolute Beginners

Learning something new can be daunting, and figuring out how to learn piano is also something that many of us struggle with. Should you pay a private tutor for lessons, or could you teach yourself at your own pace to save some money? Here’s a quick guide to what you need to know if you’re thinking about learning the piano.

Buying Your First Piano

Before you can get started and figure out how to learn piano, you’re going to have to get yourself an instrument. Pianos can be expensive, though you may find a good deal if you ask around: people often need to get rid of old pianos. Another alternative is to buy yourself a keyboard until you can justify the expense of a piano.

Learning the Basics

Before you decide whether you want to teach yourself or pay for piano lessons, you can at least get started learning the basics. A standard piano has 88 keys, though there are thankfully only 7 notes (and 5 black notes) to remember – they simply repeat along the piano keyboard.

The white piano notes are known as “naturals” and the 7 note scale is as follows: C – D – E – F – G – A – B, after which the cycle repeats itself and starts back at C. To get started, you’ll need to memorize where C is on the keyboard. It’s the white note to the left of the set of two black notes.

When it comes to the black notes, there are only 5 to learn. Each key has two names, either known as a sharp or flat, depending on the key of the music being played. If the black note is just to the upper right of the white note, it’s known as a sharp. For example, the black note to the upper right of C is known as C sharp but, since it’s also to the upper left of D, it’s also known as D flat.

Moving On From There

Although it’s recommended to find a piano tutor in your area, the reality is that this isn’t the right way for everyone to learn. Some people simply don’t have enough time, don’t have the money, or don’t have a suitable tutor near them. If this sounds like you then you still have a few options.

The first is to buy a series of piano books: a number have been developed to take you up from complete beginner level. However, some people may struggle with this method. In this case you could also opt for DVD courses, or sign up to an interactive online service. Deciding how to learn piano is really a personal choice.

Knowing how to learn piano simply means knowing the way you learn best, understanding what level you’re already at, and working lessons/ learning into your lifestyle. One thing’s for sure: learning piano is something you’ll be glad you did!
