How to Avoid Blowing Your Next Job Interview!
You feel like a winner after that amazing interview you just had. So, how come you didn’t get the gig? Despite a killer resume and raving references, you could’ve sabotaged your chances in many ways.
Maybe, you just shared too many things about you. Sharing details, whether good or bad, about your job hunt with the entire world shows an employer that you don’t know the first thing about discretion.
Hiring managers now Google a prospective candidate, and that means that your account pages are fair game. The best thing to do would be to stay mum about the job opportunity at first until you have been officially hired.
Another reason could be the way you put on too much cologne or perfume just to make a great first impression. Hold the spritzers for when you go out at night. In addition to stinking up an office, layering on the perfume shows that you’re not very business-savvy.
To an employer, going over the top with the perfume isn’t just unappealing; it could also be interpreted as you’re being frivolous. It also makes you seem clueless about the effects your product choices have on other people. Think first before putting some onto your skin, because your potent signature scent could really give them something to sneeze at.
When you talk to someone for the company you want to work for, don’t get too friendly and comfortable immediately. The person interviewing you seems fun and laidback, so you let your guard down and start to go all informal the way you would with a coworker.
Don’t do this. It can be tough to gauge how to react when a potential boss is extremely casual, but acting too casual during an interview should never go both ways. He wants to know how you handle yourself in any kind of professional situation.
Just continue to show him the same respect you would any authority figure that can make or break your future. Always speak about your ex boss respectfully even if he wasn’t that good.
Skip the urge to trash-talk and focus on why you’re perfect for the job. It’ll show that you won’t bad mouth people behind their backs, and that you can work well with others. The employer will be assessing your character when you get to talk.
During the interview, don’t forget to come up for air. Sure, you want to sell yourself, but resist talking nonstop. The interviewer may even ask himself if you’re listening at all. Don’t make them think that you’re this way on the job or that you may be too wrapped up with yourself. Instead of yapping away, show that you’re a great communicator.
Ask smart, poignant follow-up questions to prove that you’re listening, and keep an ear out for key phrases about what exactly they’re looking for in a candidate. Then, use those same phrases to briefly describe yourself. Remember, this is the only chance you get to make a great first impression. Use the time wisely.
