Home Business Ideas | Honey Beekeeping for Profit
Becoming a honey beekeeper is one of the simplest types of “farming” anyone can do. The first step, however, is the most important one, and that is making sure that you, or no one who lives with you, is allergic to bee stings. Once you’ve got that one figured out, then you can actually get started on the path to setting up a bee hive.
There are some phone calls you’ll need to make, especially if you live within city limits. Some areas are restricted and, therefore, off limits to such things as keeping a bee hive. If you live out in the country, however, there should be no problems with you setting up an area a good distance away from your house to set up your bee hive.
Once you’ve designated an area to keep your bees, it will cost you approximately $300 per hive. You’ll only need one to start out with. That will provide you with everything you need to make a profit. However, before you begin buying your bees and equipment, you’ll need to become a registered beekeeper. It’s always important to get all of the necessary paperwork out of the way initially so that you don’t run into any problems later.
A very important part of setting up things to become a beekeeper is getting the proper equipment to protect yourself when you’re dealing with the bees. This equipment, as well as other things you’ll need to set up your bee hive, can be found in places such as eBay. In fact, that may be a very good place to start looking because you can save quite a bit of money that way.
When you have your hive set up and you’re sure it’s all working correctly, it’s time to order your bees. The easiest way to acquire honey bees is through an established Apiary. Place your order for the honey bees during the winter. Most beekeepers order during January and February. The orders are shipped in March and April and they come through the postal service. Since most mail carriers aren’t comfortable with carrying around live bees, they’ll call and ask you to pick them up.
Once you have everything set up, your bees can begin producing honey for you to collect. This is done through a highly specialized method. If you’ve never done this before, you may want to get someone who’s experienced to help you, at least the first time.
The honey is, after all, the whole reason for becoming a beekeeper and colonizing your bee hive. Local raw honey is in high demand no matter where you live. There are too many healing properties in honey to list here, but it’s used in a wide variety of ways and in a multitude of natural recipes. It’s also considered a healthier sweetener than sugar by many people.
This may be one of the more tricky home based businesses to set up but once you have everything in operation, you’ll have a profitable business for life.
