Handling ADHD through herbs
ADHD and ADD ( Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Attention Deficit Disorder, respectively) are common behavioral disorders among school age children. People at times do not notice this immediately since a child is normally active and exudes a lot of energy.
There are symptoms which may indicate the presence of ADHD or ADD but are not wholly conclusive until a doctor does a complete diagnosis of the child.
Some symptoms may be excessive talking, fidgeting or having difficult staying still, easily distracted and answering before hearing the whole question. These symptoms appear to be fairly common and are exhibited at times among adults.
It takes a great deal of observation and monitoring before we can surmise some form of disorder in the child. Teachers and other mentors in the educational field may be able to help determine whether a child is displaying fits of disorder.
ADHD and ADD can affect a child academically and socially. They have difficulty in completing their lessons and they cannot concentrate for a long period on details.
They tend to rush when they are with their friends. They switch activities fast and tend to lose contact with their friends. These disorders can be addressed and children with disorders can learn to live a normal life. One approach is through herbal treatment.
There are traditional herbs such as valerian, passion flower, lemon balm and lavender that address hyperactivity by providing a calming and relaxing effect on the brain and nervous systems.
These are used when the ability to focus attention is not affected. Be careful in the use of passion flower as it may cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting and drowsiness. Lavender seems to be more effective with girls.
If the child displays an inability to focus attention, there are other traditional herbs which may be more effective.
Skullcap is known to induce sleep, relieve nervousness, and moderate illnesses related to the nervous system. Although traditionally accepted as a sedative, there are no conclusive medical findings on how effective is the herb.
Other herbs such as German chamomile, gotu cola, ginkgo biloba and rooibes are traditionally accepted as effective treatments to improve memory and promote balanced moods. Some are taken n the form of tea. These, however, are recognized in the medical field as supplements.
People contend that ADHD symptoms can be connected to proper diet and adequate nutrients.
Some people may be allergic to ingredients contained in the food and this may trigger hypertension and other nervous reactions in the person. Identifying these ingredients may take a long process and might not be conclusive in the end. If you feel at ease with herbs, try the ones above.
Herbs have been used by different societies worldwide. It appears to be effective but we cannot be definite without proper accreditation from medical societies. Use herbs if you are comfortable with them.
Allow a few weeks for the herbs to take effect. Practice prudence and monitor the child carefully for possible side effects. If the symptoms persist or begin to worsen, then it may be best to seek medical advice.
