Good Time Management Tips For Homeschoolers

Having time is something that many people complain of not having enough of and for any homeschooling family it can become a major concern. Trying to slot in home education and daily life within 24 hours can seem overwhelming, particularly if you are new to this.

However with a little planning and determination, you can do much to minimize the stress induced by not having enough time.

See below a few well worn time management tips that have stood the test of time by many homeschooling families.

1. Routine:
First, develop a routine with your children; this is important as children thrive in a predictable environment. It also gives them a sense of security and continuity when they know what is going to happen and when.

2. Plan:
Planning saves time. You must plan your homeschool activities to see how they fit into your everyday life. Use a large calendar or planner and write in everything you do.

Write down all your appointments, lessons, trips, holidays, extra curricular activities, everything. That way you can see some structure to your day and can plan accordingly.

3. Learning styles:
Know your child’s learning style. This is essential and will save you time and stress in the long run. They are three main learning styles: visual, auditory and kinaesthetic.

Understanding your child’s learning style will make it much easier to plan, pick a suitable curriculum and tailor your teaching to the way he or she learns. There are many free online quizzes and tests that your child can take to determine their learning style. Do a search on the internet and see what comes up.

4. Teaching Subjects:
Don’t feel you need to teach everything yourself. Use the expertise and knowledge of others. Enlist other moms and professional homeschooling parents to teach various lessons and make use of local courses in your community, churches and colleges.

Do not attempt to teach a subject you are unsure of or know nothing about. Your lack of understanding and knowledge will show through and this will frustrate both you and your child. Try at least to grasp the basics and if you are struggling seek outside help.

Before teaching a lesson, try and collect all your resources and supplies the night before. Prepare the ‘classroom’ if possible and have everything to hand so that you are not rushing around looking for stuff.

Time how long it takes for your child to finish a worksheet or a book and build that time into your planning.

5. Chores:
Ensure that children lend a hand with the household chores. You cannot be expected to do everything! Everyone must take part in homeschool, housework and homework! You can start by training them to pick up after themselves and assigning them certain tasks.

How about assigning your children certain chores on specific days. For example Fridays could be the day you do the weekly shop or Saturdays could be laundry day.

Whatever system you devise it will not only save you time but will teach your children household management and basic responsibility.

6. Aim to avoid things that steal your time.
Put the telephone on answer machine and let family and friends know not to call you between homeschooling hours.

Overlap subjects by teaching two at once. Incorporate things like reading, math and problem solving into your daily activities (eg preparing meals, reading books, doing errands etc)

Learn to say no: This is something that adults especially woman find very hard to do. We have become so good at multi tasking that we sometimes take on too much only to find ourselves overstretched.

Prioritize what you feel is important for you on any given day and politely refuse to take on anything else that may impinge on that priority. This is absolutely necessary if you want to gain time.

Being efficient and effective, by utilizing the best practices for your time management is essential to your success in home schooling your kids.
