Boost Self Esteem – Four Powerful Tips
by Prashant
Good self confidence does not necessarily translate to great self esteem.
Self esteem is your opinion of yourself – it is how much you think you are worth as a person. It is generally used interchangeably with self confidence, but there is a difference between the two. While self confidence has to do with belief in yourself and your abilities, self esteem has to do with the value you put on yourself as a person.
A great confidence and trust in one’s abilities does not always necessarily translate to a positive self esteem, and a positive belief that one is worth those abilities. But the converse is usually more true – a low self esteem may lead to lesser confidence in one’s abilities as well; and improving self esteem is a natural way for improving self confidence.
Here are few tips for improving the value you put on yourself:
1. Get out of the habit of constantly criticizing yourself. This is tip number 1, and an absolute gold mine; it’s significance cannot be over-stated, in terms of helping boost self esteem. The moment you recognize negative self-talk happening, as Maxwell Maltz said, “pull yourself up short, and just stop it”.
2. Quit criticizing others. If you find that you are guilty of deriving satisfaction when putting others down, stop that as well. Your self esteem does not need the crutch of other people’s inabilities. Always accentuate the positive, and diminish the negative – in yourself, and in others.
3. What about if you are the one who is subject to criticism? Spend a second over it to decide if you agree with it; if you feel the criticism is genuine, accept it with grace, learn from it, and move on. If not, you can say you disagree with it, and leave it at that. In either case, no need to be overly sensitive about it.
4. Always speak your mind. Speak your mind, as long as you are not intentionally hurting someone. And practice speaking loudly and clearly. No need to yell, of course, but try to ensure others don’t have to strain their ears to hear you, or ask you to repeat.
Here is a beautiful thought to leave you with:
“If you really put a small value upon yourself, rest assured that the world will not raise your price.” -Unknown
