Are You an Optimist or a Pessimist?
There are easy ways to tell if youre an optimist or a pessimist. An optimist looks for the silver lining in every storm cloud, the positive in every bad circumstance, or the good in every person.
The pessimist on the other hand is always waiting for the other shoe to drop, just knowing something bad is about to happen. Hes always on the lookout for the negative because of his attitude.
Even if something good happens, he believes it to be a fluke, a one time occurrence. Someone else gets the good job, the happy life, the peace within – but never him because he knows it wont last. If he does get the job hes always dreamed of, hes waiting for a demotion or waiting for the company to close up shop.
The pessimist lives in the land of what could happen (and always thinks its that bad things that could happen) rather than staying focused on the present. He shines the spotlight of his thoughts and emotions always on whatever is bad.
The optimist is persistent in his lifes pursuits and treats failing to achieve any of his goals as being one step closer to achieving success. But a pessimist sees failing as the ultimate end and often quits, never to try again.
An optimist and pessimist both experience lifes ups and downs – its how they react to those experiences that label them as positive or negative people. Optimists are more content in life and when trouble does arrive on the scene, they roll up their sleeves and get to work finding a solution. They attract people to them and find it easier to form lasting friendships because others are drawn to positive people.
Pessimistic people tend to be more narcissistic than optimistic people. Usually this stems from negative situations theyve encountered that have wounded them. In some cases, theyve had expectations that havent come to pass and theyve had great disappointments that made them learn not to hope for any good.
What many people dont understand is that while they cant predict their future and cant stop things from happening in life, they can control their behavior. The old saying act dont react means that you can decide before any situation what your attitude will be about it.
In other words, you have a choice whether to be an optimist or a pessimist. You can pick whether you want to be happy and to be at peace with yourself. It starts by controlling what you think.
What you dwell on in your thought life can determine how you view your world and the people in it. If you always expect people to be unkind to you, then you give off an air of expectation, a protective shield, unconsciously pushing people away from you.
Pessimistic people alienate others by their actions and speech, which is sad because some pessimistic people could do and be so much with a little adjustment with their outlook on life.
