Antioxidants For The Body

In recent years, antioxidants have gained in popularity, so much so that most people have at least a basic understanding of what they are and what they do. Many doctors have talked about the different benefits that we can get from them.

In addition to that, advertisers have also incorporated the idea of antioxidants to boost the sales of different foods that naturally have antioxidants level. But, what are antioxidants really?

On the basic level, antioxidants are substances that reduce and prevent the damages caused by the free radicals into the body. But what are free radicals? Free radicals are the electrons that have been detached from the atoms. Thus, they are free, roaming around the body and causing damages instead of circling around the atom.

Free radicals are formed during oxidation which happens during the metabolism processes. Metabolism happens when we walk; go out in the sunshine, breath or even sleep. In short, as long as we are living, free radicals are continuously formed which causes damages to our cells.

Uncontrollable and continuous damage to the cells may eventually develop into different ailments such as aging, bone ailments, organ failure, cancer or even death.

Having more antioxidants in the body can reduce the effects of the free radicals into the body. But, what are the ways to increase the antioxidants in the body. That is very simple. One can eat more organic and fresh fruits and vegetables. In short, one’s diet must be revised to improve one’s health.

It is very much advisable to include at least five servings of fruits or vegetables into the daily diet. Not only will it reduce the risks of having neurological diseases, heart diseases and cancer, it will also boost the body’s immune system to fight many more diseases or even aging.

Foods that are very rich in antioxidants are corn, berries, lime, carrots, acai berry, lemon, oregano, pinto beans, dates, spinach, chiles, apricots, cloves, broccoli, garlic, cinnamon, hempseed oil, grapes, tomatoes, barley and rye, prunes, olive oil, mangos, blood oranges, coffee, green tea, sweet potatoes, raw nuts and seeds, almonds, squash, whole grain brown rice and more. The most important thing is to keep the fruits and vegetables the most natural and organic way.

In addition to that, there are some supplements that may boost the antioxidants level. The most common antioxidants include glutathione, beta-carotene, Vitamins A, C and E, Selenium, alpha lipoid acid and melatonin.

The body also produce natural antioxidants such super peroxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase but in order to produce them, the body requires zinc, manganese, copper and selenium.

So worry not! There are a lot of ways to reduce the risk of having too many free radicals in the body. Just enjoy eating the right food – fruits and veggies included. Though there are supplements, it is still better to choose the natural way.
