Have you noticed the way mothers always tell their kids not to slouch?

This is correct because not only does good posture make you look better, it is also good for your bones and overall health. Look at the following reasons necessary to maintain the proper positions when standing, sitting or walking.

‘Why should you have good posture?’

Standing, sitting and walking tall does not only benefit your overall look, but it also contributes to your health.

Try to picture what happens to your bones when you slouch. If you are accustomed to sitting with a curved back, more weight is applied to your spinal cord and this may attribute to problems with your bones when you grow older.

Poor posture will make you appear shorter than your actual height; so use some effort and time to correct your posture and improve your appearance. ‘Correcting your Stance’

Spending some time to correct your posture should not be torture.

First, you should feel comfortable and relaxed when are in a proper position while sitting, standing or walking. Second, this will make you more alert and have a better disposition.

Here are some ways you can determine whether your posture is correct or not:

When sitting or standing, your spine should be in an almost straight line – from your head to the bottom part of your back.

To determine if you have a straight back, you can relax until your back finds its normal upright position. Your chin should be parallel to the floor, and your head aligned with the sky.

When sitting, your shoulders must be parallel to the floor and not leaning toward either to the left or right.

When walking, the knees should be in a central position. Keep them relaxed and not locked forward or backwards.

The most common posture problem is having a slouched chest or back.

You may have noticed that people with heart problems often have a slouched back. This is because their heart and lungs cannot properly support the chest, resulting in improper posture. To correct a slouched or hunched chest, make certain that your chest is slightly uplifted and centered.

The spinal column does not form a perfectly straight line; instead there is a slight curve in the middle. If your back is extremely curved, then you have imperfect posture.

Try to find a balance; relax and let your back form an almost straight line.

Having good posture does not only improve your appearance: it also lightens your movements, improves your health, and adds to your total well-being.

Good Posture to enhance Appearance

Posturing is very important for people both young and old. Good posture will insure that a person is balanced at all times and not become a hunchback. People should practice this whenever sitting in a chair, walking or lying down in bed.

Since it is tiring to work on a computer for an entire day, a person must choose a chair that has a good cushion and is ideal for their back. The individual should sit properly with the hips against the back of the chair and the knees slightly lower. Since this only protects the upper back, a small cushion should be inserted to provide cushioning for the lower portion of they body.

Whenever a person stands, the knees should be bent slightly to help the person rise. As an individual moves forward, their shoulders should be relaxed making it easy to move freely and not appear to be a robot.

A good way to practice posturing is by using a mirror. A person can see this while standing in facing forward or in a sideway position. This will make it easy to determine if everything from top to bottom is aligned.

Choosing the right mattress is also important for good posture. A person should purchase a mattress that is not too soft or too hard. Whenever lying down, the back should be against the bedding. Those who have a hard time can put a pillow under the knees to assist them to attain this position.

As much as possible, people should avoid sleeping their side; this will cause strain on the muscle that is pressed against the bedding making it numb.

People should also avoid curling up since this puts strain on the spine and may cause muscle pain after getting up.

People who have problems with the back should consult a chiropractor for an examination and to make recommendations for improving their posture.

Those who want to improve their posture should exercise regularly at home; working on the abs and back. A person can choose to purchase and exercise machine that is available at a sporting goods store or from the internet. Those who don’t want to spend a great amount of money can exercise by doing sit-ups and other floor exercises.

Constant practice at home and when going out in public can really help a person’s appearance and prevent them from slouching or walking like penguins which will make an individual the laughing stock of the town.

The way you talk affects your appearance

A pleasing appearance does not depend entirely on physical beauty but is also influenced by the gait at which he walks and the way he carries himself. A person who may look beautiful can become ugly the moment he open s his mouth.

Taking stock of the way you communicate with others will help you improve your appearance. A glib talker will be more attractive than a person who stands timidly quiet, not because of a lack of wisdom but because he has nothing else to say.

If you are knowledgeable on any topic, then you can walk “the talk” and make yourself the most beautiful or handsome person in the room. A good talker captivates his audience without being overbearing: but be careful to not to overdo it by monopolizing the conversation.

Becoming a good talker or speaker works hand in hand with possessing proper manners. You may be good in talking but if you do not possess the proper manners, then your general appearance suffers or id ruined. Avoid giving curt answers like “yes” or “no” because it will make you appear blunt.

What you lack in the “looks” department can be compensated for by using a very good talking stance to improve your appearance. Engaging your associates in intelligent and polite conversation will always improve your appearance and reputation – which is good.

A proper talking stance includes the quality of voice you use when conversing with others. Avoid being too loud or condescending as this will, in many cases, turn other people off and will taint your general appearance to them. A voice that is shrill or “falsetto-like” will give other people a bad impression of you. Do not use an angry voice when talking with others even if you are accustomed to using this type of voice. There is always an opportunity to change bad habits!

While talking, show your interest not only in the topic or issues of the day, but also in the people around you. Being kind to those in the conversation circle will earn you higher points, appearance wise.

You may inject humor in your conversation but tread carefully because there is a thin line between humor and bad taste. Never make fun of others because it is a black mark on your appearance. Always make your conversations pleasant and decent.

While you may not be the most handsome or beautiful face in a room, make sure you exude a good appearance by being smart, respectful, decent, and a good conversationalist.
