Enhancing esteem is pretty much a family matter; and if it doesn't happen there, it is doubtful it will happen anywhere.

According to the author, four conditions are associated with high self-esteem in kids:

- The child experiences full acceptance of thoughts, feelings, and the value of his or her being

- The child moves in a context of clearly defined and enforced limits that are fair, non-oppressive, and negotiable

- The child experiences respect for his or her dignity as a human being. The parents take the child's needs and wishes seriously and the parents are willing to negotiate family rules within carefully drawn limits.

- The parents tend to enjoy a high level of self-esteem.

Parents and teachers are not omnipotent with regard to a child's self-esteem, but neither are they powerless. Parents, therefore, need to consider the nature of their influence of which they have the ability to exercise. As food for thought to parents: "Be careful what you say to your children, they may agree with you."

Before calling a child "stupid" or "bad", it is important for a parent to consider the question "Is this how I wish my child to experience himself or herself?"

Bring out from within your children a respect for authority. It is the parents' task to discipline their kids so that they bring out from within them a desire to follow careful instructions from those in power.

The Power within You

The brain normally weighs a little over three pounds in males, and a little under three pounds in females. Despite of this weight difference, the brains of males and females function identically. The subject regarding the parts of the brain, as well as the functions of each particular part, is an intensely convoluted endeavor. To simplify, the more or less three-pound brain can be divided into three major parts- forebrain, midbrain, and hindbrain.

On the other hand, many-celled organisms can do complex activities like moving around to search for food and shelter, and being aware of what is happening in their environment.

In comparison to all other organisms lower in class than man, man is the only being on earth who can think or process the ideas he acquired from experiences, and can decide about the things he want to do. With the willpower, man can effect changes, whether these changes mean creation or perdition. Man’s life does not rely on fate alone, but on his own will. The brain enables man to conceptualize creative ideas and gives man the power to make these ideas alive.

The human body is likened to a computer system where the brain serves as the central processing unit (CPU) responsible for controlling all the physiological, psychological and emotional processes that takes place from within. The attributes of human intelligence, which include thinking, willpower, consciousness, emotion, memory, and the like, depend on the forebrain, specifically in the gray matter of the cerebrum called cortex.

The cortex might be a neutral-colored thing, but this gray matter is the source of all the colors of man’s life. With the gift of willpower, man has the ability to change the hues of his life, from angry red, to joyful yellow, to sad violet, to hopeful green, etc.

The other major parts of the brain are the midbrain and hindbrain. The midbrain controls reflexes while the hindbrain is responsible for body movement coordination and involuntary actions such as heart rate and respiration. The forebrain, where thinking is based, sends signals to other parts of the brain to make a person move.
